Tasmanian Wilderness Tour Delights

Mt Field National Park

This historic and beautiful national park has spectacular glaciated landscapes, some of the worlds tallest eucalypt forests and a network of excellent walking tracks. You can choose from a plethora of wilderness attractions; from overnight alpine walks to a sealed five minute wheelchair-accessible walk to Russell Falls, one of Tasmania's best-known attractions. There is a Tasmanian wilderness attraction to meet every possible need. The new visitor centre features interpretation displays, shop and a bistro. Picnic and camping facilities are nearby. Access to the alpine area is via the Lake Dobson Road, which climbs for 16 km through a succession of forest types to reach Lake Dobson and its walking tracks. The Mt Field National Park Visitor Centre houses some wonderful and professionally designed interpretation displays for Mt Field and the South West Wilderness World Heritage Area. In close proximity are included: a shop, craft gallery and cafe. Free day and night-time activities guided by Park Rangers are available during Tasmanian summer school holidays. These tours are both informative and fun. A wonderful wilderness tour can be easily incorporated into a packaged Spirit of Tasmania Tasmanian tour - just ask our consultants for information about our specialised discount tours.

Picton River & Tahune Air-walk

Why not consider the Arve Forest Drive 30 km west of Geeveston to reach the Tahune picnic & barbecue area on the banks of the Huon River, with its Huon pine walks through riverbank forests? We don't believe anyone could be anything but astounded by the beauty of this area. The Tahune Air-walk, high in the canopy of the forest, opened during 2001. Access to the pristine Picton River and its commercial rafting expeditions is nearby and the day or half-day adventures begin upstream on the Picton, bouncing through easy rapids and quiet reaches of the river before joining the Huon River near Tahune.

Waldheim Alpine Spa

Be inspired by the awesome beauty of one of the world's most precious places. Cradle Mountain Lodge is a unique and contemporary wilderness retreat on the edge of the World Heritage Listed Cradle Mountain/Lake St Clair National Park. At Waldheim Alpine Spa you can enjoy all the facilities that it has to offer including face and body treatment. The cost is dependant on the treatment chosen.

National Listed Heritage Areas

Tasmania is proud of its pristine National Heritage Listed Wilderness areas. Encompassing vast areas of the state, Tasmania’s Wilderness areas can take you from the glorious rainforests of the West Coast to the rugged terrain of the South Coast Walking Tracks. Visit the crystal clear opal blue waters of Freycinet peninsula at Coles Bay. Experience white-water rafting down the Franklin River or day tours by plane to pristine beaches. Spoil your senses on the unspoilt! Come and enjoy our 17 wonderful National Parks.

The Franklin River

Franklin River is one of the other of the wild rivers for which the park is named, is one of the world's great wilderness rivers and is in the heart of Tasmania's uninhabited south-west. Rafting tours are conducted on a regular basis, most commencing in Queenstown. Many tourists access the Franklin River using Strahan as their base. Strahan is a wonderful West Coast village that is tranquil, beautiful and pristine. Why not take a scenic flight (at very affordable prices) over this famous river or even take a sea plan to land on the Gordon River, capturing the incredible untouched scenery from the plane as you curve down the picturesque Franklin Gorge.

The Lyell Highway passes through the national park, and there are several walks accessible from the roadside. The Franklin River Picnic Area is located where the highway crosses the river, and there is an interpretative rainforest walk (easy, 20 min) to the river. Nelson Falls is a 20 min walk, and has a viewing platform at the base of the falls.

Donaghy's Hill

Donaghy's Hill is a moderately easy 40 min (return) walk to a lookout, where the Franklin and Collingwood Rivers can be viewed along with mountains in the vicinity such as Frenchman's Cap and the King William Range. It offers just one of thousands of wilderness walks available to the tourist who wants to relax and enjoy the marvellous scenery on the West Coast of Tasmania.
