Whether you would like to visit Strahan's fabulous Craft shops, imbued with the
aromatic aroma of Tasmania's ancient Huon Pine, and local quality Art Work
displays, you will find attractions to meet your every need. So many tourists
leave far too little time when they book into Strahan on Tasmania's rugged West
Coast. Whether 5 star luxury is to your liking or perhaps you simply like to
soak in the pristine atmosphere from a rustic campsite or tent, Strahan has an
amazing array of attractions to offer the sightseer or tourist. The list is
almost endless. Strahan provides the only safe harbour on Tasmania's west coast. The magnificent Macquarie Harbour, which is the second largest harbour in the southern hemisphere after Sydney provides an amazing haven for the vaste fleets of cray fishing and "long liner" fishing boats that utilise this harbour to ply their trade. The entrance to Macquarie Harbour is aptly called "Hell's Gates" and you'll have to experience it to believe it! How terrified the early convicts must have been when confronted with the awesome presence of some of the most terrifying harbour entrances in the world! Yet once through the "Gates" this magificent harbour offers stunning views, rain forest vistas, the magnificent Gordon River and much much more! Strahan's history is a showcase of Tasmania's. The penal settlement at Sarah Island was the most brutal in the state, where unruly convicts from Port Arthur were transported. Strahan was the major port during the west coast's boom mining days late last century, and the port was also used for the export of Huon Pine timber from the surrounding bush. These days, the harbour is an anchorage for crayfish, abalone and shark fishing fleets. The area also serves as a gateway to exploring the Franklin River. Cruises down the Gordon River depart daily, and include a journey across Macquarie Harbour to Hells Gates, where the waters of the harbour and Indian Ocean literally collide to form a treacherous passage of water. Ocean Beach, with large sand dunes and huge surf visible from the harbour cruise, is 6 km from the town and is Tasmania's longest beach. Those preferring a faster ride can try jet-boating on the nearby King River. Encompassing vast areas of the state, Tasmania’s Wilderness areas can
take you from the glorious rainforests of the West Coast to the rugged terrain
of the South Coast Walking Tracks. Visit
the crystal clear white sandy beaches, bleached and refined by the waters of Freycinet peninsula at Coles Bay.
Add to your holiday with a white-water rafting
tour down the famous Franklin River. If white
water energy is not your style, why not consider a day
tour by sea plane and fly over our many
pristine beaches. Camera in hand, you'll be astounded by the views
afforded you. Spoil your senses on the unspoilt! Come
and enjoy our 17 world famous wonderful National
Parks. The Franklin River is one of the other of the wild rivers for which the park is named, is one
of the world's great wilderness rivers and is in the heart of Tasmania's
uninhabited south-west. Rafting tours are conducted on a regular basis, most
commencing in Queenstown.
