Christchurch:
New Zealand Skiing, Trout Fishing & more.
On the beautiful south
island of New Zealand, Christchurch's international airport (population of
approximately 300,000) is easily accessible with direct flights from both Sydney
and Melbourne. The population is ultra-friendly (the famous New Zealand laconic sense
of humour can even be experienced at the airport's immigration section!) and
New Zealanders love to embrace the opportunity to provide the tourist with a fantastic
holiday experience. If skiing is your choice then there is no better option than
to stay at Methven, which is only 22Kms from the famous Mt. Hutt and within easy
driving distance from at least 8 significant ski fields. Nestled on the luscious
river flats at the base of the fantastic mountain ranges that surround it, Methven is the ideal
"base camp" location with a range of accommodation available to suit
every need. The famous "Blue
Pub" (see photo below) is "the" place to be found after a hard day's skiing on the
surrounding ski slopes. You can hire or purchase a wide range of ski gear and
clothing, enabling you to travel light when you visit Methven. Car hire is even
available there. On the days when
you choose not to ski, there are plenty of opportunities to entertain yourself.
Trout and Salmon fishing stimulates the appetite (with or without professional New Zealand guides), horse riding,
hot air ballooning, hiking, jet-boat rides or relaxing sight seeing are all at
your fingertips on the relatively sparsely populated south island of New Zealand. The
rivers run deep, fast and strong, their turquoise colour radiating purity and
pristine cleanliness from their depths. Trout abound in these world famous
fisheries. Salmon fishing is strictly seasonal but trout fishing on some rivers
is open to the public all year round.
To the angler, New Zealand is salmonid heaven!
Mt
Hutt, New Zealand
Mt Hutt, New Zealand as seen
from Methven, South Island New Zealand. The perfect base destination for
your New Zealand holiday. We chose to stay at the self-contained
Brinkley Village, Methven. This photo was taken just metres from our
doorstep. Brinkley's double spa, great restaurant and well appointed units
provide the ideal base for a New Zealand holiday. Close to several top ski fields, and within an
hour's drive of Christchurch airport, Methven offers everything that a
"base camp" should; including great shopping, friendly locals, centrality
&
more. New Zealand is a fantastic holiday destination that satisfies the most demanding
holiday makers. Skiing occurs right up to the end of October. When the skiing's finished you can hire a guide and go fishing for world class
Atlantic Salmon, or go hot air ballooning or even horse riding. Maybe just relax and tour,
enjoying
the virtually deserted roads, soaking up the incredible alpine scenery
in some of the cleanest air on earth. Mt Hutt is only 22Km from Methven,
an easy 3/4 hour drive taken by sedan, via the regular shuttle buses or
maybe in your hired 4WD. The slower pace of New Zealand will bring you
into a state of utter euphoria that is rarely experienced in other parts
of the planet. You can just take your time, unwind, relax and enjoy. For
those who seek visceral or physical stimulation New Zealand also offers
the very best & affordable holiday experiences.
Rakaia River Gorge, New Zealand
Rakaia River Gorge is just 15 minutes
drive from Methven and offers jet boat rides, trout fishing and guided
salmon fishing. Its crystal clear water is something that the eyes just
have to behold. This photo was taken in September, just before the
salmon season opened but with fishing for 15lb (7 Kg) trout available all
year round, who needs salmon you might well ask? This water is
gloriously clear and to watch the trout jump and crash through the
turquoise surface, their iridescent scales reflecting glorious hues
into the pure surrounds is a fantastic & absolutely exhilarating experience. Don't waste
time thinking about it, just do it! Book your New Zealand holiday today
with Australian Discount Travel & Tours and you'll soon be luxuriating
in some of the most pristine and unpolluted country anywhere in the
world. You can burn calories in New Zealand at a rapid pace if you
choose or simply relax, soak in the sights and sounds and
replenish your weary body. It's just so easy and relaxed, with wide open
roads and spectacular scenery along the way. The gorgeous scenery, river
plains, & spectacular
snow-peaked mountain ranges of New Zealand's South Island will simply enthrall you.

Ski packages, New Zealand
Skiing New Zealand is just about as good as it gets. Mt
Hutt offers skiing conditions suiting the absolute beginner to the most
advanced Heli-skiing available in the world. Here we see "Highway 72", a
groomed beginner's slope that can be enjoyed by all the family. Easily
accessed by a 4 person chair lift, the slope's fine manicuring is a
delight to experience. No matter what, you'll need appropriate clothing
(see Paul Evans' gear in photo opposite). Good insulation ("Gortex"
or similar), breathable, insulated and waterproof clothing is the order
of the day. Likewise, possession of a good quality pair of ski goggles &
sunscreen is absolutely essential!
Chairlifts Mt
Hutt , New Zealand style
Summit Six is the new 6 person chairlift that
operates at high speed over the glorious Mt Hutt ski field. Summit
Six will take you to the top of the mountain and provides
exceptional skiing opportunities for a broad range of skier abilities.
From double "black" slopes through the the more amicable "blue" slopes,
Mt Hutt New Zealand provides a range of skiing holiday opportunities
that will satisfy the most ardent and demanding skier. Here we see Paul
Evans waiting at the summit of Mt Hutt contemplating his next adrenalin-filled
2 Km downhill
ski-fest!

Mt Hutt, New
Zealand
Jane Evans at the top of "Summit Six", Mt Hutt New
Zealand. No matter what your skiing ability (Jane's skied alongside the
Canadian Downhill team!) Mt Hutt offers the skier such a broad range of
skiing experience that you'll be satisfied no matter what your skill
level! Note the detailed coloured map in the background. Easily
understood, these maps mark clearly which routes to the bottom will suit your
style. The diversity offered to skiers is impressive, with absolute
beginners able to ski the "bunny slopes" while the more experienced can
choose from a wide variety of more challenging pistes.
Methven, South
Island New Zealand
ApresSki
delights await at Methven's famous "Blue Pub". The favourite haunt for
skiers, the pub combines alpine charm with a balance of warmth,
sophistication and hospitality that only New Zealanders seem able to
provide! The meals are fantastic and the prices very affordable. Methven
has two supermarkets, a Chemist, Dr's surgery and even a
physiotherapist to attend to those aching limbs. Fuel can be purchased at the local service station so
your New Zealand base has all you should require. Just look at the
colour of that late afternoon sky - it's just magnificent.

Family holiday packages,
New Zealand
The whole family is catered for in New Zealand. Ask our staff how to
manage a New Zealand holiday that will suit your whole family then just
sit back and enjoy! Note the beautifully groomed slope in the
background. Patrolled constantly by elite ski-school staff, the slopes
of Mt. Hutt offer the very best in alpine and cross-country skiing. The
scenery is unspeakably beautiful and the facilities and ground staff
simply superb quality. Hiring your ski gear is a breeze at Mt. Hutt. The
friendly professional staff are the best we've encountered anywhere in
the world. Take our word for it - we've skied there and we'll gladly
return as soon as possible
Skiing New Zealand
Chairlifts carrying 4 or 6 persons are the order of
the day and make for easy, relaxed transit to the tops of the pistes.
Aching legs take a well-earned rest as the skier progresses up the
mountain, enjoying the fantastic views, chatting about their last "run"
and maybe even discussing the menu for the restaurant lunch to follow at
the end of the next run! Here mother & daughter Jane & Amy alight from a
4 person chairlift in preparation for their next exhilarating schuss
down the magnificent slopes of Mt Hutt. The ground speed of chairlifts vary (as
does the height reached by the lifts) but the views from all are nothing less than outstanding.
No matter what, chairlifts really make your day, reducing time spent on
your legs and maximizing skiing time - just what the doctor ordered!
