Known as "The Door to the North West",
Devonport is utilised by the TT Line Ferries (Spirit I, II & III)
to ferry people and vehicles to and from Melbourne and Sydney. A city
of some 30,000 people, Devonport is the major gateway to the North West
of Tasmania, including Cradle Mountain, and other wilderness areas.
Serviced by some of the best highways in the State, Devonport provides
a diverse range of tourism delights - from vineyards, raspberry farms,
cheese factories, trout fishing, sea fishing and much much more. You
can visit and ride aboard the famous Don River Railway. Stay in one of
the many charming Bed & Breakfasts in the area. Only 10 minutes
away is the enchanting Latrobe with its cycling and wood chopping
history. Wander the streets in the many bric
a brac and antique shops or visit the nearby Platypus sanctuary. A fantastic
location for exploring the North West Coast. With Burnie and Ulverstone and
Penguin just a short drive away.
Devonport is of course
home port to the famous Spirit of Tasmania Ferries (Spirit of Tasmania 1 & 2). A
quiet and interesting port, Devonport is only a proverbial stone's throw from
many wilderness attractions including: limestone caves, Cradle Mountain National
Park, pristine and clear trout fishing waters, lakes and more. The delightful
harbour is a boating enthusiasts delight and the bream fishing, offshore and
estuary fishing is simply fabulous.
