Cradle Mountain's 161,000 ha. park is a United Nations-recognized World Heritage Area, encompasses the magnificent Lake St. Clair which is , a 200m (640 ft) deep ancient glacial lake, and reputed to be the deepest glacial lake in the southern hemisphere. The lake deserves it's privileged place as an icon of wilderness delights and if you travel to Tasmania, you should make every effort to visit this area of the state. It's picturesque vistas and plethora of opportunities to engage with nature at it's best is virtually indescribable. Cradle Mountain boasts a variety of fine bush walks, varying in difficulty from the simple & basic 1/2 day routes to some of the most rigorous that an experienced bush walker would desire. You can choose from excellent rudimentary bush walks that take you on a magnificent circuitous trek around magical Dove Lake on the National Parks & Wildlife's professionally built environmentally friendly (and comfortable) "duckboard" paths. For the more adventurous (and experienced), the famous Overland Track that takes the adventurer to pristine Lake St. Clair is one of Australia's most famous bush trecks, and covers 85 km of fantastic wilderness. Not for the inexperienced by any means, please ensure you check weather guides and follow all directions concerning bush walker safety. Walks go through various terrains, from pandanus and wildflowers to Tasmanian myrtle and King William pine forests. Visitors planning to take any of the lengthier walks are well advised to be prepared for changing weather conditions. Other than campgrounds, the only accommodation in the immediate vicinity of Cradle Mountain is the Cradle Mountain Lodge, on the edge of the park. The Lodge offers 4-star chalet-style accommodation, with a nicely decorated central lounge building. Chalets have wood fires, and bold but friendly native animals will occasionally come to the door looking for food. There is a scheduled feeding time each evening for the not-so-bold. On the whole, Cradle Mountain is one of the ultimate Tasmanian destinations. Contact
