Useful Conference & Conventions
Definitions:
Convention
A meeting or
formal assembly, as of representatives or delegates, for discussion of and
action on particular matters of common concern.
Conference
The act of conferring or consulting together;
consultation, especially on an important or serious matter.
Seminar
Any meeting of a small group of students, as in a
university, engaged in advanced study and original research under a member of
the faculty and meeting regularly to exchange information and hold discussions.
Symposium
A meeting or conference for the discussion of some
subject, especially a meeting at which several speakers talk on or discuss a
topic before an audience including a collection of opinions expressed or
articles contributed by several persons on a given subject or topic.
Meeting
To assemble for action a conference, or other common
purpose, as a
committee, legislature, or class.
Summit
The highest state or degree. Or
meeting of the members with the
highest level of diplomatic or other governmental officials.
Congress
A formal meeting or assembly of
representatives for the discussion, arrangement, or promotion of some
matter of common interest. An act of coming together, an encounter, or a
meeting. An association, especially one composed of representatives of
various organisations.
Chairman
(sometimes referred to as the "Chair")
Literally
"the holder of the chair" (specifically the chair of authority). The term "man" (in "Chairman")
does not in any way confer or infer gender-based attribution. Rather, the term "chairman" is used in the
same context and with similar meaning to the term "manual" - designating
the use of
the hand to control (as in manual gearbox versus automatic gearbox). Hence
the phrase "Who holds the chair?" refers to the person who controls
the "chair of authority" and to the person who has authority to
manage or control any procedural matters associated with a meeting.
Usher
A person who escorts
people to seats in a theatre, church, etc or a person acting as an official
doorkeeper, as in a courtroom, meeting place or legislative chamber.
Convener
The person or
persons designated to cause to come together or assemble a group or groups of
persons, usually for some public purpose.
