Australian Capital Territory Book airfares &/or accommodation for ACT holidays online. Click Here! The ACT is Australia's National Capital and of all state/territory capitals it's renowned as the one with the coolest winter temperatures with frost & ice typical of the cooler months. Canberra is worth a visit - particularly if one is interested in the political machinations associated with the nation's "engine house" and political administration. Australia is run by a national Federal Government with six states and the Northern Territory and, ACT completing the national product. For the tourist, (and in
fact for Australian citizens) law in Australia is not clear cut - Federal law
cuts across all states and territories but then state laws vary between states.
This means that speed limits, road rules, parking laws, many business laws can
(and often do) change as soon as you cross an invisible state or territory
boarder. Health regulations and business registrations can be abused because of
the lack of national continuity. A medical Dr for example can be disbarred in
one state but start up practice in another state with impunity. Similarly,
"shonky" (dishonest) businesses that have been deregistered in one Australian
state can simply commence in another state virtually immune from prosecution. Canberra - the capital of Australia - is sometimes referred to as the bush capital because pockets of bushland reserve extend almost to the city centre and over half of the Australian Capital Territory, within which Canberra lays, is classified as national park or nature reserve. With a population of more than 313,000 people, Canberra is the city that Federation created. Australia's national government sits here, as does the highest court of Australia. Many of the most important monuments in the country are located in Australia and they're visited by millions of people each year. Some of these attractions include the Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, the National Gallery of Australia and Canberra's newest attraction, the National Museum of Australia. Canberra is a young capital - a planned city like many other capitals in the world. American architect Walter Burley Griffin designed the city after winning an international architectural competition in 1912. The spirit of his original design, which celebrates Canberra's natural environment, is still evident as the city grows. Canberra is located 300 kilometres from Sydney and 655 kilometres from Melbourne and is accessible by road, train and air transport.
